On June 12, 2025, the USPS issued a DMM Advisory announcing the retirement of the Detached Marketing Label (DML) product. Starting July 13, 2025, DML is being phased out in favor of the Plus One mailing format. However, the USPS is providing a six‑month grace period to ease the transition for mailers.
🕒 Key Deadlines & Transition Timeline
Date | Event |
July 13, 2025 | Postal rates change; DML price category eliminated; users start using Plus One rates, even if they are still preparing DML files |
January 4, 2026 | Industry software updated (.dat and .xml formats) to support Plus One exclusively |
January 18, 2026 | Final cutoff — DML mailings are no longer accepted; Plus One is required |
✅ What This Means for Mailers
- Use Plus One Rate Line Now:
Even if your systems still generate DML labels, USPS advises you to include the new Plus One rate line during the grace period. - Software Adjustments Coming Jan 4, 2026:
Expect your third-party mailing tools (dat/xml) to start outputting Plus One formats only from this update onward. - Post‑January 18, 2026 — DML Rejected:
Once the software update is live, any mailing using DML will be rejected automatically.
🔍 Why the Change?
USPS is streamlining its product lineup. Plus One consolidates functionality and brings mailing processes in line with current software capabilities — simplifying compliance, pricing, and operational efficiency.
